You may have noticed when you were nearly run over, that EVERYONE cycles in The Netherlands. Cycling is that popular, that the bike lanes are bigger than the side walks and they even have car parks but for bikes… bike parks?
With The Netherlands being so flat, it makes cycling the easiest form of transport. Not only is it cheap, it’s healthier and good for the environment too. But be careful before stepping in the bike lane, you might cross the path of an angry biker.
Bike shopping is just like car shopping. You want to have a bike that runs well and is pratical, oh and looks good too. You will find many bike stores in your area, you can hire and buy brand new or second hand bike in these stores. There is also a website called Marktplaats where Dutchies put items online for sale. It is the equivalent to Gumtree in the UK. There you can also find second hand bikes. If you know a lot about bikes and know what to look for, this option may work out for you.
One HUGE thing to look out for when buying a bike is that some older models don’t have normal breaks! What!!.. I hear you say! They must have proper breaks… You would think so right? Some bikes have a strange cycle backwards to break function. It’s a scary thought and no idea how it would actually stop the bike quickly! The Dutch are fearless, they have scary break systems and not one single person wears a helmet. Oh and don’t be surprised if you see a Dutchie transporting several children in a Bakfiets!
Since getting my bike, it has given me the freedom I missed after leaving my car in the UK. I hadn’t cycled a bike in years and after a wobbly first bike ride but it all came back pretty quickly.
You will see that some Dutchies paint their bikes, or decorate them with flowers. Add any extras that makes the bike feel more like yours… and makes it easier to find in the rows and rows of bikes. Mines has a lovely wicker basket!
Once you buy a bike, you will find it’s the best way to explore your new town/city you live in. The Netherlands is a beautiful country, take full advantage of the scenery and get around on your bike. Just be careful to cycle on the right side of the road.
Now that you have your own bike, it will quickly become your new best friend. And in no time you will be saying;
Ik hou van mijn fiets – I love my bike
